Sculpture Class at SJC

D.H. Banker is teaching a figure sculpture class in clay at St. John’s College.

Clay is one of the most versatile and enjoyable sculptural mediums available today. There is a primal satisfaction in creating a unique mark in mud and firing it for permanence. Having worked in many media, this sculptor returns repeatedly to the immediacy of clay. Whether for use as a model, or a finished work of art, the possibilities in clay are infinite and limited only by our imagination. In this class, we will work from a live figure model. There will be several warm up exercises before we settle into a longer, several-week pose. The instructor will discuss and demonstrate the use of abstraction as well as different principles of sculpture in relation to rendering the model in clay. Participants may also join this class and work independently in clay on a different subject under the instructor’s guidance.
