“In the summer of 2018, I had a difficult back incident, one of several over the past few years. I had scheduled trips to Florence Italy, then China, both of which I had to cancel. Realizing that this was finally the time to make major changes in my life, I pondered over my 46-year career of being a production potter and sculptor.
I decided to retire from being a potter. This has been the guiding force of my adult life since I was 22 years old but I have been thinking over the past few years about what I would do when I was forced to make this decision. I have been involved with many aspects of the ceramic field and have made many friends along the journey; I did not take this decision lightly. With both excitement and trepidation, I began developing my new art form.
I pursued several aspects of papermaking and casting and finally settled on paper mache. I wanted a permanent product and found that fortifying paper with a polymer mortar creates such a substance. I find this process to be a very similar tactile activity to soft clay, in that it’s a mushy kind of thing. I can work with paper in sculpture as well as vessel making; my vessels have never been functional, they are stand-alone objects. I also continue to work in clay, but removed all glazes from my palette, which removed much of the weight in my studio. I anticipated a learning curve of about 1-2 years, but within six months I was there. My work with guilds, museums, conferences, and writing continues in this newly transformed state.
I spent this year redesigning my studio from a clay/mud space to one of paper, clay, canvas, and paint. As I retired from one medium, I shifted towards another, yet never retiring from art. I have found my Voice again!
Life is good, Jayne”
