We’re excited to welcome Stacey Perrine Sass, from Saint Michaels, Maryland as a juried artist for Paint Annapolis 2022! Stacey retired from a 32-year career teaching both high school and community college art. She is now focused on the wonderful challenge of painting watercolors “en plein air”.

Whether painting while boating or camping, it is the aqueous nature of water media that fits Stacey’s aesthetic preference for loose, expressive depictions of outdoor life and the atmospheric changes of natural light. Many of her paintings are created while sitting in her anchored boat. Presently living on the eastern shore of Maryland, she is active in several art organizations throughout the state.

“The aqueous quality of watercolor paint make it a natural match for the depiction of the Chesapeake Bay region via plein air painting. I love living in this vibrant area which magically melds the natural with the man-made and marvel at the tenacious people who make a living from the water.“
– Stacey Sass

Competing in numerous plein air competitions each year, she has been honored with several awards. As a public artist, she has taken home ribbons at Paint Annapolis events in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020. Stacey earned her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1987 and continues to study with master watercolor artists.
“The varied weather conditions of the Annapolis area require that the watercolor artist become intuitive with regards to how the medium will react to that day’s humidity level. It has been a thrill and constant challenge for me to do this with various subject matter.“
