We’re excited to welcome Jim Rehak from Seaford, Delaware as a juried artist for Paint Annapolis 2023! Jim’s first art interest was comic book illustration but later transitioned into an interest in oil painting while studying for his Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Jim studied for his BFA at Maryland Institute of Art where he found his interest in oil painting. During this time he spent his summers sketching portraits and caricatures on the Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk. He continues to sketch caricatures a source of income and an opportunity for drawing practice.

“The strength of a painting is often fueled by direct observation. By communicating a powerful sense of light I attempt to evoke the experiences of the landscape”
-Jim Rehak

Jim’s work is heavily influenced by the impressionists in the nineteenth century that practiced plein air painting. Rehak works outdoors and paints directly from nature which allows him to capture landscapes observed in natural light.

He also spent many years working for a sign company as an art director, when they use to depend on brushes and paint rather than machinery. Jim is also a member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, Rehoboth Art League, and Art League of Ocean City.

Jim participates in paint outs and plein air competitions regularly and is represented by various fine art galleries. He is also a member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, Rehoboth Art league, as well as the Art League of Ocean City. Some of the awards Jim received in 2022 include: “Best in Show” at the Rehoboth Art League Members Exhibit, Historical Commemoration Award at Paint Ellicott City, Best Light Award at “Artists Paint OC” in Ocean City, MD, Second Place Quick Draw at “Artists Paint OC”, and WCAC Award at Worcester County Plein Air in Berlin, Maryland.
