We’re excited to welcome Hema Gupta from Morganville, NJ as a juried artist for Paint Annapolis 2022! Hema is a self-taught artist working primarily with watercolors. Hema had a natural passion for art and felt herself drawn to the properties of watercolor. She began showing her work publicly as she joined the Freehold Watercolor Society and plein air groups to participate in paintouts.

With a keen interest in plein air painting, Hema strives for a loose and impressionistic style in her work. She enjoys painting a wide variety of subjects, from urban landscapes and seascapes to portraits. Hema additionally finds inspiration in contemporary watercolor masters such as Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet, Andy Evansen, and David Taylor.

Hema loves to participate in plein air contests, and her plein air work has been highly awarded locally and regionally and she has exhibited her work in many shows with frequent sales. She won First Place in the Quick Draw at Plein Air Easton in 2021, First place at LBI Plein Air Plus (2021), and Second Place at Hudson Valley Plein air festival (2021). She is a Signature Member of the Northeast Watercolor Society.

“Why watercolors?” But there is no answer that can be expressed in words! The joy I get watching the paint and water flow and mix on paper is impossible to describe.”
